Two artists, who both have followed an extraordinary track, are exhibiting together:
Jeroen Hollander (°1976, Antwerp) was selected by Jan Hoet for the exhibition ‘Yellow Geel’ (2001). Since then, he has participated in several exhibitions. His imaginary city maps and detailed, colourful public transport networks never fail to captivate the viewer. Jeroen Hollander won the ING Young Belgian Painters Award in 2009. The jury was struck by the strong appeal in Jeroen Hollander’s poetic ‘mapping’. Each plan shows a complex network, visualizing mobility and representing urban dynamism. Moreover, Hollander succeeds in giving his ‘mapping’ a psychological dimension. Subject yourself to the enthrallment of Jeroen Hollander’s work by visiting the exhibition.
Toon Van Borm (°1973, Lier) also visualizes human structures, shaping large fields of handwritten language. His works have a still quality, inducing meditation. While Toon Van Borm uses language as a visual means, he often seems reluctant to let his work or career be captured in words. So let his mute appeal be reason enough to discover the impact of his works.
Jeroen Hollander and Toon Van Borm exhibit together for the first time. The presentation will bring about an interesting dialogue between the works of both artists. We invite you to weave links and patterns between the works of both artists.

Pondruel, Benson and Van Borm focus on language. Each reaches a specific visual language by taking their litteraly worded world as starting point. Pondruel constructs concrete sculptures that become metaphors for the mental. Benson itersects the signifier and the signified into one object. Van Borm’s script originates an indecypherable space.

Bij Pondruel, Benson en Van Borm staat de taal centraal .Zij vertrekken uit hun persoonlijk letterlijk verwoorde leefwereld om tot een specifieke beeldtaal te komen. Pondruel maakt betonnen sculpturen die een metafoor worden voor een mentale wereld. Bij Benson valt het woordbeeld samen met de inhoud terwijl bij Van Borm door de schriftuur een niet te ontcijferen ruimte ontstaat.

Cultuurcentrum Mechelen wil kunst in de publieke ruimte brengen. Het is een bewuste keuze om kunst niet alleen te presenteren intra muros. Het cultuurcentrum wil de Mechelaar en bij uitbreiding alle bezoekers van de stad in contact brengen met beeldende kunst, en meer specifiek met hedendaagse kunst. Al enkele jaren gebeurt dit via tentoonstellingen en vitrineprojecten in De Garage en in de tentoonstellingszalen Melaan. Nu gaan we een stapje verder. Vanaf oktober 2008 wordt hedendaagse kunst pas echt in de stad geïntroduceerd. Elke maand wordt aan een andere kunstenaar gevraagd om een poster te ontwerpen die dan in de stad verspreid wordt. Geen wildplakkerij maar wel op daartoe voorziene plaatsen, café’s, openbare gebouwen, …
De posters dienen geen direct doel buiten de toeschouwer prikkelen op een positieve manier. Philip Metten , Dennis Tyfus en Paul Casaer verschenen al in het straatbeeld.
Het huidige project werd uitgewerkt door de jonge beeldend kunstenaar Toon Van Borm. Het subtiele en zelfs tactiele beeld van Toon Van Borm maakt zich op een opmerkelijke manier los van het oppervlak maar incorporeert tegelijkertijd nadrukkelijk de achtergrond via een welgekozen uitsparing in het papier.
Hou de straten in de gaten! Ook voor de volgende posterprojecten van o.a. Sylvia Macias Diaz, Danny Devos en Philippe Van Snick. Het posterproject wordt de volgende maanden verdergezet en krijgt een vervolg in een expo, publicatie en wie weet zelfs een simultane actie in verschillende steden.

Cultuurcentrum Mechelen brings art into public space through the conscious choice to go beyond its own walls. The Cultuurcentrum wants to bring art –especially contemporary art- to the people living in Mechelen and to visitors to the city. After exhibitions and showcase projects in De Garage and exhibitions in the Melaan halls we take a new step. From October 2008 contemporary art is really being introduced into the city. Each month an artist is asked to produce a poster to be distributed in the city. No fly posting, but making use of regular space in cafes, public buildings,…
The posters do not serve any immediate purpose except to positively excite their public. Philip Metten, Denis Tyfus and Paul Casaer already appeared in the streets.
The current project was devised by young visual artist Toon Van Borm. His subtle and even tactile image remarkably detaches from its surface while at the same time explicitly taking in the background through a well chosen perforation in the paper.
Look for these posters in Mechelen, and for comming projects by amoung others: Sylvia Macias Diaz, Danny Devos and Philippe Van Snick. The posterproject goes on in coming months and will be extended with an exhibition, a publication and possibly a simultaneous action in other cities.

Toon Van Borm(1973) used two weeks to more than patiently draw a mural. He applied two rectangles using wax (furniture polish), and with a pen wrote illegible text on these. This intervention is striking: the unfinished drywall became a carrier for the equally incomplete work “written” in the delicate wax.
References are wide ranging, going from manuscripts over text scratched in old paintings to contemporary work such as by On Kawara and Opalka.
Here, language is being written into an aesthetic-elegant and autonomous “text”, the content of which totally escapes “the reading” and resides solely in the artist’s mind at that exact moment of concentrated and sustained execution.
Take a very close look: between both black surfaces the writing with the pen simply goes on…

Toon Van Borm (1973) maakte gedurende een periode van twee weken op een meer dan geduldige manier een wandtekening die bestaat uit twee met (boen) was aangebrachte rechthoeken waarop hij met pen onleesbare tekst schreef. Het is een indrukwekkende interventie: de onafgewerkte gyproc-muur werd de drager voor een al even onaf “geschreven” werk op het broze was.
De verwijzingen zijn breed en gaan van manuscripten via ingekraste teksten op oude schilderijen tot referenties aan hedendaags werk van o.a. On Kawara en Opalka.
Taal wordt hier geschreven tot een esthetisch-sierlijke en autonome “tekst” waarvan de inhoud helemaal ontsnapt “aan het lezen” en alleen in de gedachten blijft hangen van de kunstenaar op dàt exacte moment van geconcentreerde en tijdsintensieve uitvoering.
Kijk heel goed toe: tussen de twee zwarte vlakken loopt het schrijven met de pen gewoon door…
